Why Black?
At Pennywell, black is not an absence. It is abundance. Our farm sits on ancient black loam—soil so rich it smells of rain and iron. Our herd of Black Welsh cattle have grazed these slopes for thirty years. Our black barn stores the harvest. Our blackberries stain the hands of every child who visits. This is not a colour scheme. This is heritage.
🖤 Black Welsh Cattle
We breed one of Britain’s oldest herds of Black Welsh beef cattle. Their dark coats absorb heat, their meat is deeply marbled, and their temperaments are gentle. No hormones. No feedlots. Just grass, rain, and the black earth of Pennywell.
Our beef is sold in the Black Barn every Friday. Limited numbers. No third-party retail.
More Than a Colour — A Philosophy
🪴 Black Soil
Our fields are black with humus. Generations of compost, manure, and cover crops. Soil carbon is our bank balance. We farm for the black beneath our boots.
🧄 Black Garlic
We ferment our own garlic for 60 days until the cloves turn black as liquorice. Sweet, sticky, umami. Sold exclusively from the farm shop.
Black Barn
The heart of Pennywell. Oak beams, corrugated iron weathered to matte black, and the best local flour, eggs, and preserves. Come see us.
Blackberries
Our hedgerows are wild with blackberries. Pick your own in September, or buy our small-batch blackberry & elderberry jam.
Black Oil Seed
We grow black oil sunflowers for our poultry. The seeds give our hens the energy to lay through winter. Closed loop, no waste.
Black Bees
Native black bumblebees nest in our walls. Dark, hardy, early-flying. We are working with Devon Wildlife Trust to map them.
🖤 The Black Barn — Farm Shop & Bakery
Open Thursday–Sunday, 9am–4pm.
The Black Barn is not painted black. It has become black—decades of Devon wind and rain have turned its iron sheets deep grey-black. Inside, the smell is of hay, bread, and woodsmoke. We sell:
- Black Welsh beef – by the joint or pack
- Black garlic – whole bulbs and fermented paste
- Blackberry preserve – foraged from our own hedges
- The Black Loaf – overnight sourdough, baked before sunrise
- Black oil sunflower seed – for garden birds
THIS WEEK ONLY Fresh black kale, black radish, and the first blackberries of the season.
